Canada is a country that is gaining a lot of attention and attraction. When you look at the healthcare system and everything that the country has to offer it really is no wonder. That being said, planning a trip to the country is by no means easy. This is especially true if you are coming in as a foreigner. While there will be tons of things that you have to get in check, it will be the deciding of the landmarks and destinations that will be the most exciting. The only problem is that you will likely be limited on time like most travelers. If you want to get the most from your trip, you should make sure that you check out these landmarks and sites. Happy Rock
Back in the early 70s, the Manitoba government was looking for a way to increase their tourism rates in Gladstone. They had a number of fundraisers and events, but it wasn’t until the Happy Rock was erected that the area started gaining attention. The Rock was erected right on the side of Highway 16 and offers a one of a kind experience. It is literally a smiling rock that just stands on top of another rock, but it waves as drivers as they pass by. The Rock is just right around the corner from the Riding Mountain National Park and is another must-see if you are already on your way to check out the Rock.
Halfway Tree
If you know anything about Manitoba then you know that it is extremely flat. You would think that Canada would be mountainous. Unfortunately, that is not the case for Manitoba. This one is located just less than 10 kilometers east of MacGregor and sits right off the eastbound lane of the Trans-Canada Highway. The tree is really significant for travelers, as it marks the halfway point between Brandon and Winnipeg. However, this is not the only importance that the tree holds. In fact, there was a time when it caused great hysteria and protest, as the government sought to cut it down to improve highway safety. Luckily, the resistance prevailed and the tree is still standing today. It even has its very own spot on Google Maps. Go check it out!
Big Mosquito
The Big Mosquito was a landmark that was erected back in 1984. It might not be as old as one would think, but it carries a lot of historical significance. It sits just right off Highway 7 and is the identifying marker for the nearby town, Komarno. Komarno also hosts a Perofy Fest each year that would be more than worth checking out if you happen to be in the area when it is going on. The statue was built as a memorial to the Canadian national bird but has created a lot of myths about children getting carried away by giant mosquitoes.
