German Cockroaches
The German cockroach is one of the most common roaches in our area. It often reaches 5/8ths of an inch and will be either tan or light brown. German cockroaches are easy to spot thanks to their small size and the dark stripes on their head. One thing to know about German cockroaches is their breeding capabilities. They can breed rapidly so your infestation is going to worsen swiftly. These cockroaches tend to take shelter under the warm appliances in your home.
American Cockroaches
Although they’re called American cockroaches, they’re still found in Canada. You won’t miss them because they’re larger than other cockroaches. At the maximum, these cockroaches can reach two inches in length. American cockroaches create a handful of problems because they live for a long time, and they can fly. It takes American cockroaches a long time to fully infest a structure. They are found in steam tunnels and sewer systems most commonly. If you have them around your home, you likely have a busted sewer pipe or something similar.
There are other cockroaches in your city. Other common cockroaches will be explored in more depth below.
Pennsylvania Wood Cockroaches
Canadian residents may encounter Pennsylvania wood cockroaches. They’re commonly found in Pennsylvania and all nearby states. They can travel to Winnipeg from time to time. Pennsylvania wood roaches reach three-quarters of an inch. They usually do not reproduce inside homes. Plus, they’re rarely pests in our area. They tend to invade properties because they’re looking for blocked rain gutters and wood siding.
Spotted Mediterranean Cockroaches
These small cockroaches only reach a third of an inch. Spotted Mediterranean Cockroaches made it to North America sometime during the mid-1900s, but they’re native to Europe. They don’t enter homes often. Instead, you’re going to find them hang out near your outdoor foliage.
Oriental Cockroaches
Oriental cockroaches are one of the largest cockroaches in Winnipeg. They can grow over an inch and tend to be dark. Female members of the species do not have wings. Males develop wings and they can sometimes cover three-quarters of their bodies. These cockroaches are cold-hardy. Therefore, you’re going to find them living outside and feeding on feces and garbage.
Smokey Brown Cockroaches
Smokey brown cockroaches are sometimes found in our area but not often. Still, they might travel to our city by hiding in a shipping box. At the maximum, they’ll reach an inch and a half in length. They’re primarily found in the southern United States but can travel elsewhere.
Surinam Cockroaches
Surinam cockroaches can be found in our area. One unique thing about this species is the fact that there are no male cockroaches. Instead, all Surinam cockroaches are female. Despite this fact, you’ll find that Surinam cockroaches can breed prolifically. The female cockroaches hold eggs until they’ve hatched. Once this happens, they’ll give live birth to the baby cockroaches.
Brown-Banded Cockroaches
Finally, you’ll likely encounter brown-banded cockroaches. They’re small than the rest since they are only rich half an inch. You’ll also appreciate the fact that these cockroaches aren’t common today. They can infest residences from time to time, but they’re rare in our area.
